| History: | The Komi people remained for most of their history under the rule of Russia, Imperial and, later, Soviet. During the foreign domination, there was no shortage of discrimination and abuse reserved for the Komi, employed in work for a fatherland that was not theirs. The independent movements never achieved great results, suppressed by Moscow and St. Petersburg. It was only with the Red Revolution that the Komi were recognized and given autonomy, while remaining part of the Russian S.S.R., in turn part of the U.S.S.R. What made the Komi people what they were was not their administrative status, but rather their surprisingly well-reserved language, their inimitable culture and the strong Orthodox religion passed down to them by Saint Stephen of Perm. The day of the disintegration of the U.S.S.R. came and with it a huge civil war, in which in Syvktyvkar, the former Russian colony Ust-Sysolsk and the capital Komi, a new and hitherto unknown figure took to the streets and delivered the historic speech for the independence of the Komi: it was Barone Dylan, future president of the Komi Republic, but whose origins still remain vague. Komi sentiment was rekindled and led them to participate in the civil war, in a short but intense conflict against Russian forces, from which the latter emerged defeated. The victory was followed by the birth of the proud and nationalist Komi Republic, a refuge of democracy in today's world, with its own parliament, constitution and army. The Republic first incorporated the Nenets okrug and after a referendum, in attempt to unite the Permian peoples under one flag, advanced into Russian territory and annexed Udmurtia. |
